Retired Army Colonel Henry Cleveland "Hank" Bowden, 88, of Odenton for 40 years died of natural causes Nov. 27 at Crofton Convalescent Center after an illness lasting one year.
Mr. Bowden was born April 30, 1919, in Raleigh, N.C. He attended Duke University but graduated from the University of Maryland in 1965 with a bachelor's degree in history.
Col. Bowden served in the Army in World War II as a platoon and company commander, participating in the Battle of the Bulge with the 94th infantry. He also served in Vietnam, and earned numerous medals including the purple heart and a bronze star with three oak leaf clusters.
After graduating from the Armored School, the Calvary School, the Command General Staff College and the Strategic Intelligence School and after serving for 33 years, Col. Bowden retired in 1972 at Fort George G. Meade.
He worked as the Eisenhower Golf Course manager after his retirement from the military.
A member of the Fort Meade Golf course for 30 years, he enjoyed golfing, and was an amateur golf champion in North Carolina. He also enjoyed watching both Duke and Maryland basketball.
He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Miriam Boone Bowden; and one son, Henry C. Bowden III.
Survivors include one son, Peter L. Bowden of Gambrills; one sister, Milly Alford of Top Sail Beach, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
