Today, we pause to commemorate the life and memory of our loved one, Frances Helon Bingen, the daughter of the late Milton Clinton Nicholson and Maude Rankin Nicholson and the sister of the late Roderic Ferris Nicholson, Sr. and Jack Albert Nicholson. Frances closed the annals of life on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at Orange Park Medical Center in Orange Park, Florida. A personality and voice we loved has vanished and stilled, but we are comforted by the memories of her faith, her fervor, her sincerity, talent and humor, and the directness of expression and loving compassion for all. Her professionalism and her exemplary leadership will be remembered by all who knew her. Frances was born in Gaffney, South Carolina and was raised in Abbeville County. She graduated from Antreville High School and attended Limestone College in Gaffney, South Carolina and the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland. She received her doctorate from Nova University. We could then call her Dr. Bingen. She was a member of the Ft. Meade Retired Officers' Wives Club, a member of the Nichols Bethel Methodist Church where she served on the history committee where she was instrumental in the publication of the history of the church; also a member of the Anne Arundel County Retired Teachers/Principals Association. She served over thirty years as teacher and later principal in the Anne Arundel School System, including Meade Heights Elementary, Pershing Hill Elementary, and as principal of Manor View Elementary School in Fort Meade, MD. Dr. Bingen was preceded in death by one son, Jan Richard Bingen, and her husband of 59 years, John Richard Bingen, also known as "Bing." Family members remembering her fruitful life are her one son, Barron Bingen of Orange Park, Florida, two grandsons, Chance Bingen of Durham, North Carolina, Marlon Bingen of Orange Park, Florida and two granddaughters, Julie and Victoria Bingen of Orange Park, Florida, two great-grandsons of Durham, North Carolina, three brothers, Mitt Elon Nicholson of Martinez, Georgia, Willie Rankin (Bill) Nicholson of Abbeville, South Carolina, Douglas Franklin (Frank) Nicholson of Abbeville, South Carolina, one uncle, Odas D. Rankin of Easley, South Carolina, five nieces and two nephews, and a host of relatives, beloved friends, and countless Anne Arundel County school personnel, parents, teachers and students who loved and respected her as a mentor, leader and friend. Dr. Bingen was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in February 2010.
