Eugene E. Shoults, 79, of Annapolis, died Nov. 18, 2009.

Mr. Shoults was born March 5, 1930, in Memphis, Tenn. After graduation from Vanderbilt University, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps on June 6, 1952.

After The Basic School (TBS), in 1953 he reported to "C" Battery, 3rd Battalion/12th Marines, Republic of Korea as the Battery CO and Executive Officer.
From 1954 through 1957, he held various artillery assignments at Camp Pendleton, Calif. and Ft. Sill, Okla. During this time he participated in "Operation Teapot," which was live Atomic Bomb Testing in Nevada. In 1959 he received a Master's Degree in Physics from the Naval Post Graduate School Monterey, Calif. After duty as an instructor at TBS, Quantico, Va., in 1960 he reported to Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps (HQMC), Defense Nuclear Agency and helped establish the National Military Command Center Support Center for nuclear readiness. In 1964 he deployed to the Republic of Vietnam (RVN) with HQ Battery 1st Battalion/12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division as an Advisor and Forward Observer.

From 1965 through 1968 he was a Physics and Chemistry instructor at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. From 1968 through 1969 he was an instructor at the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico.

In 1970 he returned to combat operations in the RVN as the Commanding Officer, Sub Unit One, 1st Anglico, FMF. Sub-Unit One operated throughout the RVN supporting Marine Corps, Army and AVRN units. From 1971 through 1974 he was in the Combat Requirements Division, G3, HQMC.

He was the Class President for the 1975 Naval War College class. From 1976 through 1978 he was on the staff of the U.S. Military Representative to NATO, Brussels, Belgium.

From 1979 through 1982 he was the Senior Marine Corps Advisor, Amphibious Ship Acquisition Project, Naval Sea Systems Command, PMS 377.

On June 30, 1982, Col. Shoults retired from active duty with 30 years of service. He was recalled to active duty the following day to his previous billet at PMS 377. He was the Acquisition Manager for the Strategic Sealift Acquisition Program that awarded 21 ship contracts, 13 maritime prepositioning ships, eight fast logistic support ships, two aviation logistic support ships, and the conversion of the TAKRX container ships.

On April 1, 1985 he was again retired with 33 years of active U.S. Marine Corps service. He entered the Senior Executive Service in 1985 as a SES-4 and continued his work with the Landing Cushion Air Vehicle (LCAC) and large deck amphibious ships programs until his final retirement in 1996. In 1988 he was awarded the Gold Medal from the American Society of Naval Engineers for his achievements in naval shipbuilding.

His awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Air Medal w/ numeral 5, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Naval Commendation Medal with "V" and 1 star, Combat Action Ribbon, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/ 4 stars.

His hobbies included gardening, reading and tennis.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marilynn; two sons, Gene and Brooke; one daughter, Beth; six grandchildren; and a brother, Kenneth of Sherman, Texas.
